Al-Furqan Ageing Well Project

Al-Furqan Islamic Centre has taken forward the Ageing Well Project which has received funding, help as well as advice solely from Faith in Community Scotland, an anti-poverty organisation through one of its organisation, Transformation Team. It is all part of a pilot scheme, Reshaping the Care of Older people Initiative funded by Glasgow Third Sector Transformation Fund.

The Project began in March 2013 when a small focus group (Dr Javed Gill, Haq Ghani, Syed Tufail H Shah, Mohammad Ishaq supported by Shakeel Ali, and Brian Smith (from Transformation Team) was created at Al-Furqan Mosque to engage with the issue of a large number of Muslim elderly having nowhere to go after prayers.

Aims of the Project

  • Work with other service providers to make culturally sensitive services available locally.
  • Collaboratewithexistingservicestomakethemmoreaccessibleandcompatibletotheelders from the Muslim community.
  • Provide activities to maintain or improve health and wellbeing and reduce isolation.
  • Provide opportunities for cross cultural interaction.
  • Improve self-confidence and skills of participants and volunteers of all ages.

Objectives of the Project

  • Provide day-time activities and services for older people.
  • Provide volunteering opportunities.
  • Share cross cultural knowledge, experience and expertise.

Future Plans

  • Ageing Well project aims to achieve following goals this year, inshaAllah.
  • Set up the Project as a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) in order to apply for funding.
  • Involve the Muslim elderly ladies in the Project.
  • Recruit more volunteers.
  • Provide outings/outdoor activities in the spring / summer seasons.
